Kapoor was born on 23 August 1988 in Delhi, India. Her father is a hotelier and her mother is a homemaker. She has two younger brothers. Kapoor did her schooling from Vasant Valley School, Delhi and graduated from Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi with honours in English literature. During her college days, she participated in various theatre productions. In 2008, Kapoor auditioned for the television show India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj but could not make it to the final round.
Kapoor made her acting debut with the 2013 Sushant Singh-starrer Shuddh Desi Romance directed by Maneesh Sharma. The film was warmly received by critics and became a box office hit. For her performance as Tara Sharma, a young woman caught between the two extremes of life won critical acclaim and she was nominated for several awards including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
