Stonie was born and raised in San Jose, California, where he attended high school. After watching competitive eater Joey Chestnut win the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on television, Stonie decided that he wanted to become a competitive eater himself. In 2012, he entered his first professional eating contest, finishing in second place.
The following year, Stonie won his first major eating competition by downing 37 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes. He then went on to win Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2015, becoming the first person since Chestnut to dethrone the reigning champion.
